Pembrokeshire is a county on the south west coast of Wales known for its amazing scenery, wildlife and outdoor activities. It boasts the UK’s only coastal national park and is famous for its coastal path which takes in rugged cliffs and wide sandy beaches. This area has a rich history and there is no shortage of sights, attractions and seaside towns to explore. The region is often overlooked and provides a less crowded alternative to Devon and Cornwall.
• Pembrokeshire Coastal Path
• Golden sandy beaches
• Adventure activities
• Wildlife
The major reason to visit Pembrokeshire is the region’s wild natural beauty and abundance of wildlife. Pembrokeshire Coast National Park offers great walking and hiking opportunities. One of the main attractions is the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, a National Trail which can be walked in its entirety (186 miles!) or enjoyed in shorter more manageable sections. Taking in steep rocky cliffs and wide sandy beaches, the trail can be challenging in places but many parts of the path are suitable for everyone (even those with pushchairs).
The region has an interesting history and there are several castles to visit, notably Pembroke Castle, Picton Castle and Carew Castle. There are also a number of intriguing ancient sites here containing monoliths, megaliths and burial chambers.
You can find many options for shopping, eating and drinking in the busy town of Havefordwest. The enchanting harbour town of Tenby has a good museum and art gallery. St Davids is the smallest city in the UK and is home to a cathedral and the popular Bishop’s Palace. The monastery on the neighbouring island of Caldey Island is also hugely popular.
There is a wealth of outdoor activities on offer such as walking, swimming, surfing, sailing and windsurfing. For the adventurous, Pembrokeshire is the home of coasteering and a great place to try sea kayaking and climbing.
There is plenty of wildlife to see: puffins on Skomer Island; seals and deer in The Deer Park on Marloes Peninsula; and birds and otters at the Stackpole National Trust nature reserve.
Boat trips are an excellent way to see a variety of wildlife and visit some of the region's uninhabited islands.
Cyclists will enjoy the mountain bike trail in Preseli hills -a 6.5 mile route which offers lovely scenery including a reservoir with 100ft dam. Ramsey Island and Stackpole nature reserves also make for great days out.
The region’s golden sand beaches are second to none and ten of them have been awarded blue flag status. Barafundle Bay, Marloes Sands and Newgale Sands are all known for their outstanding beauty.
As you can see above, few places have more to offer families than Pembrokeshire. If you are looking for a fun day out, younger children will enjoy meeting rare animals at the award-winning Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo. Those looking for an adrenalin rush should try Oakwood theme park.
Taking a trip to Skomer Island to see the puffins is a must see, early to mid-July is the best time. The Telfi marshes is also a great area to spot birds and other wildlife. Other families friendly days out include Oakwood Theme Park where roller coasters and other rides await.
Whitesands, Broadhaven and Saudersfoot are all popular family beaches providing a range of activities and facilities.
